Lent: Part 34

Traffic (2000) – Listen, Mr. Soderbergh–may I call you Stephen? Good, Stephen–have a seat, Stephen. I know we haven’t discussed this, but you should know. The thing is… fuck blue filters. I’ll forgive this time because you didn’t know, and you made an excellent movie despite the filters, but don’t let it happen again.

    My Two Cents: Part 34

I think my favorite shot is right after the daughter freebases for the first time. She gets this look on her face like she just inhaled a piece of God, and a single tear runs down the side of her face. It’s beautiful, and it’s a great reminder that as much as drugs will fucking kill you, some people are still going to do it because (one assumes) it feels goddamned amazing.

I liked the filters, they underscored the disconnect between the different sets of characters in the film; just as in real life there is a massive disconnect between how politicians in washington view drugs, how middle-class suburbanites like us view drugs, and how poor Mexicans, Columbians, and Afghanis view drugs. No one is looking at drugs through the same filter, so to speak.
