Lent: Part 5

Academy Award-Nominees: Best Short Film, Live-Action

  • The Saviour – If in Act I you have a pistol hanging on the wall, then it must fire in the last act. If your lead actor is missing a hand, it has nothing to do with the story and mustn’t be mentioned, no matter how distracting that is.
  • Helmer & Søn (Helmer & Son) – I don’t know about you, but I think I’ve had my fill of filmmakers with daddy issues.
  • Éramos Pocos – I should go get me an old woman to cook and clean for me just for the joy of living with me. Or is that what marriage is?
  • Binta y la Gran Idea (Binta and the Great Idea) – The winner, yay!
  • West Bank Story – There are only two absolutely unacceptable answers for the Oscars this year: Borat for Best Adapted Screenplay, and this one.

    My Two Cents: Part 5

The Saviour – So, the moral is either “God works in mysterious ways,” or “If you screw around on your husband, he’ll make you go to church.”

Helmer & Søn – Wasn’t adorable enough to be Scandinavian at first, but then there was a naked, fat, 60-year-old man. Not the best, but it’ll do.

Éramos Pocos – Had one good idea, and I suppose that’s all you need for a short film. I thought it was a little predictable and the two leading male characters are completely loathesome though.

Binta y la Gran Idea – So, girls should go to school, and white babies should be raised in Africa so they learn not to overfish. Good to know.

West Bank Story – Grotesquely offensive, crude, unsubtle and unfunny. If that wasn’t bad enough, it’s the Romeo and Juliet story where the leads live happily ever after. The worst piece of garbage I’ve sat through in ages.

    lent project

OH YEAH! I tell people about your lent project and they all say “cool”. I forgot it was you who did it. Inspired by you, I try and do something different for lent each year. This year, to help a friend quit smoking, I’m quitting World of Warcraft. I think I’m gonna have the harder time.

anyway, glad you’re still doing this.

      Re: lent project

I still remember that it was you who gave the suggestion. Thank you for giving me the coolest thing I’ve ever done. I’m going to try to see those movies you recommended, too.
