Lent: Part 33

The Exorcist (1973) – Some might call it suspenseful. I call it serious pacing problems. In one scene, the mother (Ellen Burstyn) is on the phone, trying desperately to get through to someone. She shouts at the operator “Don’t tell me to be calm! I’ve been on the line for twenty fucking minutes!” This scene is about twenty minutes into the film. I assume she was trying to get ahold of the plot. About an hour later, it returns her call.

To be fair, what Netflix had was a special edition, maybe a director’s cut. I didn’t make note of it. I hate director’s cuts, as a rule, especially those released in the age of DVD extras.

I didn’t sit down and watch it with you, but your running commentary from the other room roughly matched my recollections. Per IMDB, even if you were watching the Director’s Cut, it’s only 10 extra minutes.

Did the girl crab walk down a flight of stairs while using a cross for a dildo? I’m pretty sure that was the major difference between the release and the director’s cut. And it proves that some shots should stay on the cutting room floor…
