That dumb movie meme, but with a touch of respectability.

Update, July 3, 2011: I’ve seen one or two more of these movies since the original posting. Added films are marked with an asterisk.

So I finally got tired of that movie meme where some schmo writes up a list of movies that are, for some reason, his definitive list. Noticing nothing on the list from earlier than 1971, I figured I’d do the meme with the closest thing I can find to an objective list. So here is that meme, based on the AFI’s 100 years… 100 movies

Movies You Haven’t Seen That I Have

    Raging Bull (1980) – sucked.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962) – long.
    High Noon (1952) – gimmicky.
    The Maltese Falcon (1941) – 100% awesome.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) – Badges? I thought you watched this one with me back when I hosted Instant Culture Theater.
Duck Soup (1933) – Exactly like every other Marx Brothers movie. Still worth watching.
    Modern Times (1936) – he doesn’t stop.
The French Connection (1971) – Another from Instant Culture Theater. Long and dull. One semi-good car chase.
    Amadeus (1984) – good soundtrack.
Dances with Wolves (1990) – title is misleading
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) – revolting.

Ooh, here are mine that you haven’t seen with my commentary.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) – if you can’t yet do a Jimmy Stewart impression, watch this for pointers, otherwise, “meh”

It Happened One Night (1934) – GREAT. MOVIE. Hilarious.
Tootsie (1982) – How did this even make the list?
Platoon (1986) – Crash. Bang. Boom. Blood. War is hell. Barber’s Adagio for Strings.
Bringing Up Baby (1938) – Also hilarious.
Giant (1956) – My high school fight song was the theme from “Giant.” I grew up in Texas so nothing that is “Texas themed” ever really does it for me. This is no exception. It is only notable because it is so long and boring in addition to being something I’m not interested in.

Oh, and I’ve seen 150/250, using IMDB’s list.

That’s 60%, only slightly worse than the AFI 100 list, but slightly better than the full 123.

And then there were like 5 or 6 more I gave up on halfway through because they were soooooo boring. I’m talking about you, 2001! And you, A Clockwork Orange!
